Darfur

Since 2003, more than 400,000 people have been murdered, 2 million people have been forced from their homes, and 3.5 million people completely rely on international aid workers for survival. (SaveDarfur.org)

Background

In 2003, two rebel groups in Darfur formed to fight for reform within the Sudanese government and to address issues such as underdevelopment and political marginalization. The Sudanese government retaliated. The regular Sudanese army and the Janjaweed, a militia backed by the Sudanese government, have been fighting the rebel groups, The Sudanese Liberation Army/Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement. The Sudanese army and the Janjaweed have targeted the civilian supporters of these rebel groups.

The Sudanese government and the Janjaweed militias are responsible for the burning and destruction of hundreds of rural villages, the killing of tens of thousands of people and rape and assault of thousands of women and girls

What the world should have learned from the Rwandan Genocide, mainly to act fast instead of sitting on our asses, hasn’t been learned. The UN Security Counsel has yet to deploy UN Peacekeepers and take any significant action.
