Colie (to me): What’s the capital of California?

Me: Sacramento.

Andrea: Sacramento is the capital of California? When did it go there?

Me: Um, it’s always been there.

Andrea: So, wait, what’s the capital of Detroit?

Me: Detroit is a city, it’s in Michigan.

Andrea: I thought Detroit was a state.

Me: No, it’s a city, in the state of Michigan.

Later, I was asking her questions because I wanted to know if she was just having one of those moments, or if she really is uneducated.

Me: Where’s Gettysburg?

Andrea: Russia.

Me: One of the most important cities in our nation’s history and you think it’s in Russia.

Andrea: So, Italy?

Me: No, our nation is not Italy.

Andrea: What’s a nation?

I hate to say this, I really hate to say this, but she was being serious. She’s 14, she should know this stuff. Here are some other things I’ve learned from Andrea tonight.

  • Mt. Rushmore is in Michigan.
  • The Rocky Mountains go from Colorado to Brazil, but she originally thought that the Alps were in Brazil.
  • Abraham Lincoln was president in the 1600’s.
  • Teddy Roosevelt was the president during WWII.
  • She still thinks Detroit is it’s own state.
  • Dallas is in Mexico.
  • Seattle is in Maine.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Possibly both. What are they teaching in school?

  1. I’m fourteen, and that is just plain pitiful. I almost flipped when I read that Abraham Lincoln was president during the 1600s. That was right after Bill Clinton, right?

  2. Haha. I’m trying to straighten her out, but it’s tough.

  3. [...] Now, I’ve noticed this sort of behavior in her since I’ve returned from San Diego. For instance, when she finds something funny, she’ll smile and say “laugh out loud”, as in lol. Keep in mind, this is the same sister that thinks Gettysburg is in Russia. [...]
